More information on Dana Point, CA

Dana Point is a located in the southern section of California’s Orange County. In the 2010 census, the population of Dana Point was estimated at approximately 33,351.

With its alternating network of towering cliffs and tranquil coves, Dana Point is definitely a stunning natural landmark. A noted surfing spot that attracts surfers from all over the world every year, Dana Point encompasses one of the few harbors on the coast. Many of the first businesses in the area actually catered to the growing clientele of surfers who frequented Dana Point for the excellent surfing opportunities that it offered. The city also offers easy access to visitors coming from the surrounding areas by way of State Route 1.

The name “Dana Point”–which is also the name of the area’s headland–is derived from author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., who in his book entitled “Two Years Before the Mast” described the area in favorable terms. Calling Dana Point “the only romantic spot” in the area, the author also deplored the poor condition of the harbor. In the years since then however, the harbor has been developed into a more effective port for commercial interests and tourists to the area. Today, Dana’s own ship, the Pilgrim, has been immortalized in a full-size replica that is proudly displayed in the harbor.
